The Committee on Drug Control, Ogun State, led by Pharm. G. O. Fafiolu, the Director of Pharmaceutical Department at the State's Ministry of Health, has announced plans to join the global community to celebrate the annual United Nations Anti-Drug Day holding on June 26.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is a United Nations International Day against drug abuse and the illegal drug trade. It is observed annually on 26 June, since 1989. The observance was instituted by the General Assembly Resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987.

In a meeting held by Stakeholders, doubling as members of the Committee, Pharm. Fafiolu explained the need to continuously promote awareness on the dangers of drug abuse. Worried about the growing rate of illegal drug use in Ogun State, Fafiolu stated activities  to commemorate this year's event to include a relay tagged 'Race Against Drugs', Lectures, and a Road Show.

A representative of the State's chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Akolawole Shoremi, addressing other members at the meeting, explained the need to introduce Community Ambassadors as a grassroot measure to join the fight against drug abuse. He further pledged the support of the Council to ensure the war on illegal drug trade or use is better promoted among the youths.

The celebration to be held on June 26, at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Kuto, is to enjoy wide media coverage with a Press Conference scheduled to hold on Tuesday, June 25, 2019.
