2019 ogun youth council election: nans, naoss, are non-members of national youth council of nigeria.

BEING TEXT OF A PRESS CONFERENCE ON THE NOV. 2ND YOUTH COUNCIL ELECTION, DELIVERED BY THE LEADERSHIP OF NATIONAL YOUTH COUNCIL OF NIGERIA, OGUN STATE CHAPTER, HELD TODAY NOVEMBER 5, 2019 AT OGUN YOUTH HOUSE, MKO ABIOLA INTERNATIONAL STADIUM, ABEOKUTA.

PROTOCOLS,

1. Gentlemen of the Press, Members of the State Executive Council, Heads of affiliate Voluntary Youth Organizations, Branches’ Coordinators, Leaders and eminent Stakeholders of the Youth Council, and distinguished Youths of Ogun State.

2. Let me once again use this medium to welcome you to the Ogun Youth House, the Secretariat of the Ogun State chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria.

3. This press conference is necessitated to clear the air on spurious, false, fake, hypocritical and deceitful allegations raised by a member of the Royal Ambassadors of Nigeria, Olanrewaju Mosaku, who woefully lost his electoral bid for the Office of the Chairman of Ogun State chapter of our revered Council having scored 14 votes against 145 of the elected Chairman, Com. Abdul-JabarAyelagbe. We are informed that this allegation is being sponsored in collaboration with some factional leadership of some student’s bodies like National Association of Ogun State Students and National Association of Nigerian Students, Ogun State, with no membership affiliation with the Youth Council. We wish to set the record straight that these group of factional student Leaders are politically sponsored by enemies of the Government and the Youth for personal interests.

4. Although, the initial thought of the Council was to ignore the garbage as not to dignify the characters promoting these spurious allegations with the hope that the Organization, the Royal Ambassador of Nigeria, that sponsored Olanrewaju Mosaku for the election would have called him to order to refrain from defaming the good repute of the Council and dishonouring the democratic process that ushered in the current leadership. But since the organization is not forthcoming in clearing the air with a position on Mosaku’s immoral conduct, this release becomes necessary to protect the electoral interest of the vast majority of the Youth of Ogun State and the general public.

5. For the records, the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) was established in 1964 and re-invigorated by the National Youth Policy of 2001, 2009 and 2019 as the umbrella body for coordinating all nationally recognised Voluntary Uniform Youth Organisations, Faith Based Youth Organisations, Youth Focused Groups and Community Based Youth Organisations with Chapters and Branches at all State and Local government areas in Nigeria, for the purpose of coordinating young people towards global standards in the realization of their full potentials, dreams and aspirations, and being responsible to themselves and contributing positively to the development of their communities and the nation at large. National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) represents the youth of Nigeria at International Youth bodies such as the World Assembly of Youth, Commonwealth Youth Council, Pan- African Youth and several others.

6. For emphasis, the objective of the Youth Council is clearly stated in Article 6, Section 2 of the 2012 amended constitution of NYCN “to coordinate the activities of all nationally recognised Voluntary Youth Organization; To serve as training ground for the youth as future leaders of the country; To be responsible for active mobilization of Nigerian Youth for youth development programmes; To enhance the promotion of peace and friendship among Nigerian youth and their global counterparts” among others.

7. It should be noted that at nowhere in the constitution of the Youth Council or its operational guidelines is the Council referred to as a “UNION” or has ever engaged in such “unionism” as portrayed by Mosaku in his several press releases. This is an attestation that Mosaku knows little about the Council he claims to represent.

8. The Youth Council is a coordinating body for all voluntary youth Organizations. These organizations like The Boys Brigade, The Scout Association, Nigerian Red Cross Society, Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya (MKAN), African Church Youth Association, Ansarudeen Youth Association, Catholic Youth Organizations (CYON), The Girl Guide, Man ‘O’ War Nigeria, Sheriff Guards, Commonwealth Youth Organizations, Organization of African Instituted Churches (OAIC), Young Muslim Brothers Association and many more others are voluntary organizations that have not only registered their names in gold but with thousands, if not millions, of voluntary community development services for the benefits of the good people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and have also helped, particularly, in building the youth of the country to secure a greater and rewarding future for our dear country Nigeria. I am sure all of these services are well known to members of the Press here and members of the general public. How then would anyone regard an organization like this or its coordinating body as a “UNION”.

9. With regards to election into offices of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Article 11 of the 2012 constitution, (as amended), of the Youth Council makes a clearer and unambiguous provisions to how its leadership emerges and provides extensively for modalities for settling whatever grievances, if arise, either in pre-election matters or in  election proper. Unfortunately, neither our brother Comrade Olanrewaju Mosaku nor the Organization that sponsored him, The Royal Ambassadors made use of all the democratic processes provided. Instead, he went public disparaging the good name of the Council. It is worrisome that such a person with little or no knowledge (or believe) in the enabling laws of the Council can be put forward for an office as high as the Chairman. No wonder the highly sophisticated youth of Ogun State rejected him in such a historical defeat.

10. It is very important to state that the 2019 electoral committee of the Ogun Youth Council did an excellent job by following religiously the provisions of the constitution of the Council in discharging its duties.

11. Aside from the window of appeal provided for by the constitution where candidates can present their cases if screened out by the electoral committee or members or the general public feels a particular candidate should not have made the list of qualified candidates come up about characters or documents of candidates in the pre election. The constitution in Article 11 section 5 also provided for the election petition committee to handle issues that arise on Election Day.

12. On our new Chairman, Comrade Abdul-Jabar Ayelaagbe, he presented himself before the electoral committee, which look carefully into his documents and found him worthy and qualified in character, learning and necessary records fit to contest the State Chairmanship and today by the special grace of Almighty God he has been sworn in as the substantive Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Ogun State chapter.

13. It is pertinent to note that Comrade Abdul-JabarAyelaagbe, by virtue of previous representations at the Council, has meritoriously served the Ogun State Youth Council in many capacities as the State PRO, and State Secretary to warrant such defamation of character by this unscrupulous assembly of losers. One wonders the basis of all the cries today. Hence, the leadership of the Council will not take this character assassination with levity as the law will be employed to take its due course.

14. Moreover, the Youth Council is a body of voluntary, religious, and community based youth Organisations offering communal services where all members, irrespective of their professions or place of work, are entitled to aspire for any position having met the provisions of  the Constitution.

15. For records, the election was held in the presence of relevant stakeholders, government representatives, the media, law enforcement agencies, representatives of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Southwest and National Delegates of the Youth Council, and it has been adjudged to be free, fair and credible by all relevant stakeholders, with the election results as follows:

16. It is on this note that we called on the leadership of the Royal Ambassador, within an ultimatum of 48 hours, to clearly state its position on the spurious allegations and defamation of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Ogun State.

17. While the new leadership of the Youth Council will not tolerate any act of indiscipline from any member organization, local branches or its member from any quarters, we assure the entire youth of Ogun state of fulfilling all our mandate by the special grace of Almighty God.

18. Yours in youth development.

Comrade Adebare Ariyibi
