nycn, nlc, others celebrate international anti-corruption day in ogun

International Anti-Corruption Day: Monday 9th, December.

“Corruption begets more corruption, and fosters a corrosive culture of impunity. The United Nations Convention against Corruption is among our primary tools for advancing the fight. Sustainable Development Goal 16 and its targets also offer a template for action.”

— UN Secretary-General, António Guterres

Every 9th December is set aside by the United Nations as International Day on Anti Corruption, to reflect on negative implications of Corruption to development and create awareness on needed actions to curb the menace and develop a strong ethical culture for good Governance.

The Transparency and Accountability Network, a partnership of over 30 Civil Society Organizations, Labour Union and National Youth Council of Nigeria organized an Awareness and Sensitization Walk, Media engagement and Advocacy to policy makers.

The Walk kicked off at Iwe Iroyin at 7am and terminated at Governor's office, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta about 12pm, where the TAN leadership presented an address to the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Olakunle Oluomo and the State Governor, HE Prince Dr Dapo Abiodun MFR, represented by the Chief Economic Adviser, Dapo Okubadejo, Head of Service, Mrs Amope Chokor, Consultant on Budget, Olaolu Olabimtan and the Permanent Secretary for Budget and Planning, Alh. Hassan Adekunle.

Every year $1 trillion is paid in bribes while an estimated $2.6 trillion are stolen annually through corruption – a sum equivalent to more than 5 per cent of the global GDP. In developing countries, according to the United Nations Development Programme, funds lost to corruption are estimated at 10 times the amount of official development assistance.

Corruption is a serious crime that can undermine social and economic development in all societies. No country, region or community is immune. This year UNODC and UNDP have developed a joint global campaign, focusing on how corruption affects education, health, justice, democracy, prosperity and development.

The 2017 joint international campaign focuses on corruption as one of the biggest impediments to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

SAY NO TO CORRUPTION!
