world cancer day: ogun deputy chief-whip leads ogun youths on global awareness campaign

The Deputy Chief Whip for Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Shola Adams, on Tuesday February 4, 2020, led the Youths of the State in commemorating the 2020 World Cancer Day.

Adams, who is also the the Chairman for House Committee on Youth, Sports and Empowerment, while addressing the leadership of Ogun State Youth Council in Abeokuta, stated the need for both urban and rural campaign on cancer awareness, particularly among the Youths.

Presenting self-funded campaign materials, on cancer awareness, to the youth leadership, the Deputy Chief Whip stated “On this day, I urge the Youth leaders of our dear state to embark on a serious campaign on cancer awareness to our communities, particularly among our Youths. According to the World Health Organization, 70% of deaths from cancer occur in low- and middle-income countries. And may I remind you that Nigeria is not exempted from this list of countries.

“It is hence our responsibility to continue orientates our Youths on the dangers of physical inactivity, excessive consumption of alcohol and junk foods. We must also encourage the culture of early diagnosis and adequate treatment when signs of cancer arise.

“I hereby launched these campaign materials for distribution across all communities in Ogun state,” he said.

The State Secretary of Ogun State Youth Council, Com. Akolawole Shoremi, while receiving the campaign materials appreciated the Deputy Chief Whip for his love to the youth constituency and his dedicated service to the people of Ogun State. “Your continuous efforts on improving the wellbeing of our youths are well recognized. We have given directive to Youth Coordinators of all Local Governments to run a Cancer Awareness Campaign across the state. And we are confident that this day shall remain remarkable in our efforts to reduce the risk of cancer infection in Ogun state,” he said.

This year’s World Cancer Day with the theme ‘I AM AND I WILL’ , was commemorated with a Flag-Off Ceremony in Ogun State by the Deputy Governor of Ogun State; Her Excellency, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele. The event also featured Free Screening for Breast Cervical and Prostrate Cancer at the State Hospital Ijaiye, with a repeat of the Free Screening at OOUTH Sagamu on February 5th and at the State Hospital Ota on February 6, 2020.
